The shooting at Spring Creek Village on Saturday, January 7, was the second confirmed homicide of the new year. The shooting had left one male 17-year-old victim wounded who later passed away from his wounds the following morning on Jan. 8.

The first homicide of the calendar year occurred this past Wednesday on January 4, leaving one male 23-year-old dead from multiple gunshot wounds on the 900-block of Lawyers Lane.

This weekend’s shootings also come after the New Year’s Weekend shootings just one week ago, which left at least four more people wounded.

Just before that, a separate string of Christmas Weekend shootings left an additional total of at least three dead and an additional one person wounded.

Though the Fountain City may be ringing in a new year, violent crime continues to rise throughout the Columbus area at rates far outpacing other cities throughout the southeast region and the nation as a whole.

With several more shootings in the Fountain City since Friday, the pace of the violence is firmly increasing. That increase continues to make it clear that the bloodshed is unlikely to let up anytime soon.

The Muckraker continues to urge our readers to stay safe, remain vigilant, and to take care of each other.

Residents may voice their concerns about the rise and spread of violent crime by contacting their respective city council members in both Phenix City and Columbus.

Facts are stubborn things — and we’ll keep publishing them, whether city officials like them or not.
