COLUMBUS, Ga. — Our City Is Broken: Though Fix It, We Might.
Our city is broken: though fix it, we might; As this city of ours will sure put up a fight.
We have all seen the news, and some have seen more; As they scream out “Police!” and kick down the door.
As they capture the evil that murdered our friends; Their radio squawks to serve justice again.
Call after call, through the horrors abound; The burden they bear begins to compound.
No shift change nor days off to provide some relief; Our blue line grows thinner and riddled with grief.
In the midst of fatigue: relentless, they remain; As their radio squawks loudly to go do it all again.
No leadership offered to fix problems of old; They were scolded, condescended: “You’re replaceable,” they're told.
“This isn’t acceptable,” they quietly proclaimed; As their radio squawked loudly to go do it all again.
So together they spoke, through a formal rejoice; With hopes of their union giving them all a voice.
When their union presented to the powers that be; They were met with an outrage: “You’re all racist, you see!”
No leadership offered to fix problems of old; Still scolded, condescended: “You’re replaceable,” they're told.
“This isn’t acceptable,” they more loudly proclaimed; As their radio squawked loudly to go do it all again.
As our city became broken: “Fix it, we might!”; Could be heard from our neighbors who stepped up to fight.
With a glimmer of hope: relentless, they remained; As their radio squawked loudly to go do it all again.
“These are our findings,” said the wisest around; Though on deaf ears their words fell: inaction, abound.
As that small glimmer faded: relentless, they remained; As their radio squawked loudly to go do it all again.
In response to those findings, in a true open forum; The most shameful among us showed their lack of decorum.
“You’re all racist,” they said, fingers crossed ‘hind their backs; As they ironically fired their own racist attacks.
In silence sat those we elected to lead; Still no action provided, no relief for their need.
As their burden compounded: relentless, they remained; As their radio squawked loudly to go do it all again.
Now as wits meet their ends, and our city’s attacked; These brave men and women need our leaders to act.
Through the pain, the burden, and the visceral displays; They still answer each call to lock evil away.
What acts unbecoming have our heroes affected; To deserve such injustice from our city’s elected?
As their burdens compound: relentless, they remain; As their radio squawks loudly to go do it all again.
Facts are stubborn things — and we’ll keep publishing them, whether city officials like them or not.
