COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Fountain City suffered a violent and lawless weekend resulting in the deaths of at least three people with an additional two people shot.

No less than two people are dead from gunshot wounds, two others were shot, and one innocent bystander was killed by a fleeing vehicle in a high-speed car chase.

As the Columbus Police Department remains without an interim chief at the indecisive mercy of Mayor Henderson, our city largely continues to go underpoliced.

The shootings and crime-related deaths were as follows:

  1. A shooting occurred in the early morning of Friday, April 21, 2023 on the 2900 block of 10th Street in Columbus, Georgia. No less than one person was killed.
  2. A shooting occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 3360 Buena Vista Road in Columbus, Georgia. No less than one person was shot.
  3. A shooting occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, April 22, 2023 on the 6200 block of Joyner Drive in Columbus, Georgia. No less than one person was killed.
  4. An innocent bystander was killed on the afternoon of Sunday, April 23, 2023 when a fleeing vehicle being pursued by police in a high-speed chase crashed into an innocent vehicle, killing at least one passenger and injuring another. The death has been criminally charged as a homicide.
  5. A shooting occurred on the evening of Sunday, April 23, 2023 on the 900 block of Joy Road in Columbus, Georgia. No less than one person was shot.

THE UNFORTUNATE STATS

Statistically, the level of violent crime throughout the city will likely continue to rise as the weather gets warmer and we enter the summer months.

The city has already experienced no fewer than 23 homicides in the first 113 days of 2023 alone, which is 30.95% of the year.

At the city’s current rate of homicide in those first 113 days, the city's current per annum projection is 75 homicides.

With a population of 205,617 people, the city’s current per annum projected homicide rate is 36.14 per hundred-thousand residents, leaving it deadlier than many third-world countries.

Perhaps Mayor Henderson ought to consider growing a spine and running our city before it continues to run him instead.

Residents may voice their concerns for our city’s extreme rates of violent crime by emailing Mayor Skip Henderson directly at SkipHenderson@columbusga.org, while cc’ing their respective city council members on the email.

Facts are stubborn things — and we’ll keep publishing them, whether city officials like them or not.
